Magnificat

Maybe we can start the subject by introducing one fantastic but unfortunately quite unknown musician: Mikołaj Zieleński

He was a Polish composer, lived around 1560- 1620, there is not really much known about him... only that he was in educated in Italy, so he must have met at least the works of some of the famous composers in the Venetian style. Zieleński's only known surviving works are two 1611 liturgical cycles of polychoral works, the Offertoria/Communes totius anni. These were dedicated to the Archbishop of Gniezno, Wojciech Baranowski.

I found his "Magnificat" some 25 years ago. Never I could forget the power, the captivitiy of this choral masterpiece, sung by 12 voices in three choirs (now that is rare, Gabrieli and others used mostly 2 choirs). It is published in the only known surviving work of Mikołaj Zieleński, two liturgical cycles of polychoral works, the Offertoria/Communes Totius Anni from 1611. His music is the first known Polish music set in the style of the Baroque!

Since early I listened to what is called "Venetian polychoral style", and I grew quite into a "specialist" of this kind of wonderful music, with Giovanni Gabrieli and Orlando di Lasso being the most significant composers. But this Magnificat by Mikołaj was such a hit in the face, or must I say, into my "anima"?? Particularly (for me) the dissolving of all kept back emotions into the 6th minute, when the choirs explode with "et in saecula saeculorum..."!!

Magnificat anima mea Dominum,
et exsultavit spiritus meus in Deo salutari meo.
Quia respexit humilitatem ancillae suae.
timentibus eum.
Fecit potentiam in brachio suo,
dispersit superbos mente cordis sui.
Deposuit potentes de sede
et exaltavit humiles.
Esurientes implevit bonis
et divites dimisit inanes.
Suscepit Israel puerum suum,
recordatus misericordiae suae.
Sicut locutus est ad patres nostros,
Abraham et semini eius in saecula.
Gloria Patri et Filio
et Spiritui Sancto,
sicut erat in principio et nunc et semper
et in saecula saeculorum. Amen.
